Because commuting in NYC is not as easy as it seems. It was always a dream of mine to live in a big city and have the ability to walk to work. Giving up a car and an hour long commute in traffic seemed like a dream. Until I moved to the big apple and realized just how big it really is. My commute is still an hour long, and instead of tons of traffic, I now deal with tons of people. And the subway- which isn’t always the most reliable. I have learned fairly quickly the 3 essentials that make your morning commute more enjoyable.
SHOP THE LOOK
- Headphones; and they must be wireless. These are essential to playing the “I’m a New Yorker” persona. Everyone wears headphones while commuting, and no one talks to each other. It’s weird. Headphones also allow you to tune out the interesting people who go on rants about nonsense in the subway car or on the streets for that matter. They are your ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign almost equal to sunglasses.
- Backpack; because a cross body will give you back pain for weeks, trust me I’ve tried it. Living in NYC, you have to be ready for anything. Meetings, happy hours, spontaneous dates or movie premiers, or tickets to a game or show can all come up at a moments notice. You must be ready for anything and everything at all times. This means having a bag large enough to fit your makeup bag, workout clothes, your laptop, possibly a change of shoes and anything else you need to carry with you. Because yes, they have all happened and I refuse to say no to any amazing opportunity that comes my way.
- Sneakers; your feet will thank you. Because you walk a lot throughout the day. I have been averaging between 5-10 miles a day. You can double that on the weekends. Most people leave many shoe options under their desks to change into before work. I am not one of those people. I like to have all my best friends in my apartment with me at all times in case I want to wear them. This is where my backpack comes in handy. I commute in with these black Converse All Stars and change at work. They are leather which dresses them up a bit and still look great with any outfit. I basically live in them.
