it’s no secret, especially to those who know me, i dress in some pretty questionable pieces. conversation starters if you must. one might think this type of dressing exudes confidence, that she who wears such interesting pieces must live a life of not caring what anyone thinks. #yolo- am i right? that is until the conversation goes south and by south i mean to the prairie.
my friends started the hashtag #LIW which is the acronym for Laura Ingalls Wilder. anytime i post a picture in a dress, floral print or prairie inspired look, the comments and jokes come rolling in.
it all started a couple years ago when i wore this Free People dress to the club. it was a beautiful spring sunday, the sun was shining, flowers were blooming and i had a brunch to attend. a floral print maxi dress was the perfect option for a brunch with the girls. one or five mimosas later i found myself walking into Boston’s best brunch party at Gem. disclaimer-this isn’t your typical brunch, where you sit and relax over eggs benedict and a bloody mary. this is a vodka soda, house music, dance on top of the couches type of brunch.
this might be one of the scenarios where you wouldn’t want to wear a floral print maxi dress that resembles curtains at your grandmother’s house but that was not going to stop me from having the time of my life. i used the excess fabric to my advantage twirling to the music creating movement through my dress without a care in the world. people would stare, some would ask what the hell i was wearing, others would make jokes and this was the day Laura (#LIW) was born.
moral of the story. wear whatever you want despite what people think of you. don’t be afraid to make a statement-it shows you are confident and that you are comfortable in your own skin.
