The minute I hear the word gingham, I automatically think of preppy sundresses, summertime, picnic blankets, white denim etc. etc. This poses a huge problem in my life, because all of that is so not me.
So here begs the question, how to wear gingham if you’re not preppy? To be honest I struggle with styling myself throughout the summer. I always love the idea of girly sundresses decorated in beautiful floral prints, but the minute I put one on I almost have an identity crisis. I’m perpetually looking for ways to make anything I wear have a bit of an androgynous vibe to it.
Here are 3 ways to toughen up a feminine and preppy gingham dress if you ever find yourself in the same predicament as myself.

HOW TO WEAR GINGHAM IF YOU’RE NOT PREPPY
- COLOR: Navy and white gingham are the quintessential gingham color combination. Since this is such a trendy pattern in the summertime, there are a lot more options in different various colors. I absolutely loved this green and white English Factory dress, because of vibrant take on the pattern and because of the ruffling details. Do not be afraid to try a bright color when choosing your gingham piece, because we can always toughen the look up with a pair of boots.
- BOOTS: Boots, boots, boots. I will never have enough and I will never stop asking myself if it is ok to still wear them in 90 degree weather. I couldn’t be more obsessed with these Jeffrey Campbell block heel booties. The silver zipper and hardware details really give these boots that edgy feel I am always looks for. Something about them is so unexpected with this type of dress, but someone it just works.
- BEAUTY: Think moody lip color, lots of black eyeliner and completely undone hair. You want to look like you’re not trying too hard, because you’re way too cool for that.
